Industrial Electrical Testing - "Experts at Electrical Power Systems"
Modernization & Upgrades

Service EngineerIndustrial Tests, Inc. can provide a single point of contact for modernizing your existing electrical infrastructure —applying the latest technologies to maximize performance and economy.  Typical modernization projects include retrofit, upgrade, or replacement of any of the following subsystems and components:

Protective RelayProtective Relay Upgrade
Protective relaying systems allow generators to be synchronized with larger utility systems and supply power for revenue billing when plant power demands are low. Recent advances in cogeneration protection make it attractive to upgrade and retrofit with modern relays. The result is better accuracy, protection, reliability, graphic control functionality, and communications.

Medium Voltage Switchgear Bus Bracing
With possibly greater utility fault currents, new in-house cogeneration, and additional motor loads available, short circuit ratings of MV power circuit breakers may have to be increased.  Existing bus MVA ratings may be exceeded and require corrective measures.

Bus Insulation Systems
Existing switchgear and bus ducts can be retrofitted with partial discharge sensors to support online predictive diagnostics.  Replacement fluidized insulated bus systems improve the reliability and extend the life expectancy of the switchgear bus system.  During the preliminary inspection, the sources of bus contamination (or environmental factors) are reviewed and long-term system corrections are implemented.

LV Breakers or MV Vacuum Breakers
Medium Voltage Vacuum Replacements will improve the reliability and life expectancy of Medium Voltage Breakers.  Low Voltage Retrofits will provide the same benefits for Low Voltage Breakers.

Motor Control CenterLV and MV Motor Starting Systems
Aftermarket products include retrofit kits with air-to-vacuum replacements.  In addition, for low voltage motor control and switchgear,  replacement units are manufactured as direct replacements for OEM MCC buckets.  Reliability is improved by replacing operating coils and associated contact assemblies.

LV Breaker Trip Systems
Retrofit trip units are available for all Westinghouse and General Electric air power breakers, as well as most all manufacturers. These retrofits enable old breakers to handle harmonic currents more reliably and allow the trip systems to be more accurate.

                                                                   LV and MV Cell Retrofits
Breaker RetrofitComplete circuit breakers and supporting cells can be installed into existing switchgear. The result is a new production unit, custom installed into existing vintage switchgear lineups. A site inspection determines the best breaker/cell combination to   satisfy system requirements.

Molded Case Breakers
Older-style molded case breakers can be replaced with new standard or high interrupting class  molded case breakers.  This upgrade will improve long-term reliability of the breakers.

Power Protection, Metering and Communications Systems
These systems improve equipment reliability by ensuring power quality and providing immediate notification of any threat to that quality.

Distribution and Substation Automation Systems
Modern technology to monitor and control circuit devices allows unattended operation of power distribution systems.  Additions to SCADA systems, as well as installation of new SCADA systems are common.

Power Factor Control and Correction
Industrial organizations can reduce utility usage and costs by implementing power factor control and correction measures. Where harmonics are a problem, this issue can be mitigated with filtered power factor capacitor banks.

Ground Fault Detection Systems
Systems can be applied at Low or Medium Voltage levels to eliminate costly outages, faults, and safety concerns related to repeated arcing grounds.

Surge and Lightning Protection Systems
Outages and costly equipment damage related to power anomalies can be prevented by the proper application of modern protective devices.

Automatic Transfer Schemes
Older automatic transfer schemes use old relay systems. The relay coils may be at the end of their useful life and cannot be expected to perform when needed for the next automatic transfer. An upgrade prevents the unplanned failures that can occur with this component.

Network Protectors and Relaying Systems
These systems require service and testing to ensure continued proper operation.  Older systems can be upgraded to improve reliability.

High Resistance Grounding and Detection
These systems can be installed on ungrounded systems to limit ground fault current and thereby reduce ground fault damage. This strategy retains the advantages of an ungrounded system while adding features of ground detection and correction.

Generator Voltage Regulation and Static Excitation
Many older in-house cogeneration units have antiquated voltage regulation and excitation systems.  These older systems cannot function with the precision of modern replacements, and often require extensive maintenance.  Industrial Tests, Inc. offers complete turnkey installation of manufactured products to these older systems, thereby improving overall reliability and uptime.
